For each metro: how the age mix is shifting, what industries are driving growth, and whether the growth is industry-led or retiree-led.
Miami-Dade led Florida in private job creation in 2025 (+10,608 jobs, +102,180 since 2019). Finance and professional services drove the gains. Palantir relocated its HQ to Aventura in 2026, joining a wave of finance and tech firms moving from NY/CA. The 65+ share is the lowest of any major Florida metro, so growth is working-age-led.
Tampa Bay has earned a reputation as one of the most economically resilient metros in the country through industry diversification. Downtown Tampa and Westshore anchor a financial services cluster (Raymond James, Syniverse, fintech). The healthcare ecosystem spans Tampa General, BayCare, and Moffitt (one of 52 NCI-designated cancer centers). Population growth comes from both domestic migration and international immigration, and the age balance is moderate - neither retiree-heavy nor youth-dominant.
Orlando is Florida's fastest-growing employment center. In the 12 months to mid-2026 it added 20,600 jobs - more than Miami, Tampa, and Jacksonville combined. The story is no longer just theme parks: the UCF Research Park defense/simulation cluster (Lockheed, L3Harris, Northrop), Lake Nona Medical City, the NSF Florida Semiconductor Engine ($45M), and SimSpace's cybersecurity HQ move are diversifying the economy. The 65+ share is the second-lowest of major metros, so growth is industry-led and working-age.
Jacksonville has the most diversified industry base of any major Florida metro, making it more resilient than tourism-dependent peers. Roughly 11% of workers are in finance/insurance - more than Tampa, Orlando, or Miami. JAXPORT, three interstates (I-95/I-75/I-10), and CSX rail make it the state's logistics gateway; 45 million people live within an 8-hour drive. It is the largest city by land area in the contiguous US, leaving room to grow that southern peers lack. Age balance is favorable and housing costs are the lowest among major metros.
The Southwest Florida retiree economy in miniature. A 2025 FGCU study found retirees make up 27.3% of the combined Lee/Collier/Charlotte county population (vs 17% statewide and 13.4% nationally), and this MSA has the highest 65+ share of any major Florida metro (26% in 2020, projected 32.5% by 2045). Population growth is retiree-led. Healthcare and tourism jobs dominate, but worker shortages are acute: hospitals are recruiting retired nurses back into practice to fill gaps. Housing affordability has eroded as affluent retirees bid up prices.
Projections for Brevard are higher because of the Starship scenario. Launch volume is assumed to split across three states, but manufacturing concentrates in Texas and Florida only - and the Gigabay at KSC (46.5M cu ft, operational late 2026) plus a planned FL Starfactory make Brevard the only East Coast site building Starships. Aerospace workforce grows from 14,828 (2023) toward 30,000-40,000 by 2035 as hourly launch cadence takes hold. The most striking effect is demographic: in-migrating working-age engineers and technicians pull Brevard's median age down from 46.6 to ~42 by 2045, and the 65+ share falls from 19.5% to ~15% - the only Florida metro where the aging trend reverses. Florida's 65-and-over population is growing nearly twice as fast as the overall population. The "silver tsunami" creates a skills gap, a healthcare shortage, a housing squeeze, and a fiscal risk.
Labor force participation has declined steadily since 2000 and accelerated after 2011. Baby boomers account for 55-60% of the decline; declining prime-age (25-54) male participation accounts for the rest, with 57% citing disability. Baby boomer retirements during the COVID-19 pandemic created a "skills gap" that, in the words of one Brevard workforce official, "you can't replace that experience... across the spectrum - from health care to hospitality."
Florida has more than 5 million residents 65 and over but only 418 board-certified geriatricians - roughly one for every 12,000 seniors. Two-month waits for an initial primary-care appointment are common. The shortage is most acute in rural areas and in retiree-heavy Southwest Florida, where hospitals are recruiting retired nurses back into practice. Assisted living averages $4,750/month statewide ($5,250 in Miami); home care $23.50/hour.
As retirees bid up home prices, working-age households are squeezed out. A 2025 FGCU study of Southwest Florida put it bluntly: "If we're attracting retired folks down here, does that impede our ability to keep a working age population who might be competing in terms of purchasing houses with these retirees who have income accumulated over a lifetime of work?" In Southwest Florida, 87% of retirees own their homes versus 59% of working-age residents - and housing costs are rising faster than wages statewide.
The Social Security trust fund is projected to become insolvent between 2033 and 2035. If that happens, benefits would be cut 21-23%. In Southeast Florida, where Social Security transfers are 9-10% of personal income, the South Florida Regional Council estimates a cut would cost $11 billion in annual sales, $10 billion in personal income, and roughly 50,000 jobs per year.
